Close your eyes and picture the nativity.
Most of us see a hushed stable, soft straw, gentle animals and a starry sky, with "Silent Night" playing quietly in the background.
But what if the first Christmas was actually noisy?
When we read Luke 2 carefully and set it against what life was really like in first-century Bethlehem, a very different soundscape emerges. I've written a short educational piece for young people that invites them to listen to the story in three stages:
🔊 A crowded town.
A Roman census sends families streaming into a small hillside village. Animals clatter on stony paths, traders shout, people argue over space and water.
🐂 A room full of animals.
Luke's word 'kataluma' usually means a family guest room, not an "inn". Mary and Joseph probably ended up in the lower part of a crowded house, where animals were kept at night, with a stone manger carved into the rock.
⚡ The sound that broke the night. The "heavenly host" that appears to the shepherds is, in Greek, a stratia: an army. Heaven's army appears in a land ruled by Roman soldiers to announce a different King.
The quiet version of Christmas is beautiful, and it reminds us of peace and wonder.
But the noisy version reminds us of something just as important: God didn't come into a perfect, peaceful world. He came into a crowded, stressful, noisy one, just like ours.
I'm also working on a longer research article on the sounds of Luke's nativity, so watch this space.
As Christmas 2026 approaches… wishing you a joyful and, perhaps, a slightly noisier Christmas.
As ever,
Mark
